Police warn against online misinformation as country remains peaceful

By The Respondents Reporter

The Tanzania Police Force has cautioned citizens against the growing spread of misinformation on social media, saying several videos and audio clips circulating online are misleading the public into believing that demonstrations have erupted across the country.

In a statement released on Tuesday from the Police Headquarters in Dodoma, the Police Spokesperson said the viral content is “deliberately taken out of context” and does not reflect the current national situation.

He emphasised that the country remains peaceful, with security organs maintaining close patrols across all regions.

The police clarified that the videos being shared are old recordings from unrelated events, including scenes filmed on dates in the past and footage from June 2025 showing Maasai initiation ceremonies in Arusha.

According to the spokesperson, the recycling of these materials is contributing to unnecessary public anxiety.

Authorities also reminded the public that the demonstrations advertised online as “peaceful protests” remain unlawful.

The gatherings were prohibited on December 5, 2025, after organisers failed to comply with constitutional and legal requirements under the Police Force and Auxiliary Services Act, Cap 322.

The police expressed concern that misinformation if left unchecked can undermine public order. They urged citizens to verify information before sharing it and to rely on official communication channels for updates on national security matters.

The statement reaffirmed that law enforcement agencies are fully prepared to maintain stability and will continue monitoring public spaces and online platforms to counter any attempts aimed at disturbing peace. The announcement was issued from the Police Headquarters in Dodoma.
