Dar es Salaam port sets new records, cementing Tanzania as East Africa trade hub

Dar es Salaam Port, managed by DP World, has reported record-breaking cargo volumes in 2025, reflecting Tanzania’s growing role as a regional trade and logistics hub.

The port recorded its highest monthly performance ever in July, handling 29,665 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of containers, nearly 15,000 RORO vehicles, 381,000 tonnes of dry bulk, and 158,000 tonnes of general cargo.

The growth momentum continued in August, with container volumes rising to 34,183 TEUs, RORO units reaching 21,237, dry bulk increasing to 446,608 tonnes, and general cargo surging to 231,000 tonnes.

These figures represent significant month-on-month increases and set new records across all major cargo categories at the port.

Year-to-date data for January through August 2025 compared with the same period in 2024 shows remarkable growth: container volumes increased by 59 percent, general cargo by 39 percent, dry bulk by 26 percent, and RORO units by 9 percent.

Analysts attribute the performance to a combination of operational efficiency, expanded port capacity, and strategic support from Tanzanian authorities, including the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) and the Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation (TASAC).

The achievements reflect not only operational excellence but also the commitment of Tanzanian authorities to implement bold initiatives aimed at strengthening the country’s position as a regional logistics hub.

The port’s performance is expected to have a ripple effect on the Tanzanian economy by improving trade flows, reducing cargo bottlenecks, and attracting further investment into the logistics sector.

As the port continues to handle increasing volumes, the data underscores its strategic importance, operational efficiency, and capacity to support economic growth, while signaling the expanding role of Tanzania in facilitating trade across East Africa.
