Tanzania Allocates Over TZS 2.4 billion for national school games

The Tanzanian government has set aside more than TZS 2.4 billion (approximately $920,000) to support this year’s national school sports and academic competitions, as part of efforts to nurture young talent and promote unity among students.

The announcement was made by Deputy Minister in the President’s Office for Regional Administration and Local Government (Education), Zainab Katimba, during the official launch of the games at Kichangani grounds in Iringa, southern Tanzania.

“I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to President Samia Suluhu Hassan for her continued commitment in providing adequate funding for these events each year,” Ms Katimba said.

She added that “This support has greatly contributed to the growth of the sports sector in our country.”

The annual UMITASHUMTA and UMISSETA games bring together students from primary and secondary schools across Tanzania to compete in a wide range of sporting and academic disciplines.

Ms. Katimba said the competitions have played a crucial role in identifying and developing athletes who have gone on to represent the country on the international stage.

“These school games have become a key platform for grooming future national team players,” she added.

Beyond sports, the competitions are also credited with strengthening national cohesion.

“The participation of students from both mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar has made these games a symbol of unity and cultural exchange,” said Ms Katimba.

This year marks a historic return of the games to Iringa, more than three decades since the region last hosted the national event.
