The Mwenga Hydro project, a significant renewable energy initiative located in the Mufindi District of Iringa region, is set to transform the energy landscape following substantial government investment.

Funded by the Rural Energy Agency (REA) with approximately 16.6 billion shillings, the project aims to produce four megawatts of hydroelectric power.

The funding comprises 10 billion shillings dedicated to connecting customers and 6.6 billion shillings allocated for project implementation.

During her visit to the project site on October 31, 2024, Advera Mwijage, the Director of Alternative Technology and Renewable Energy at REA, underscored the importance of the Mwenga Hydro project in advancing sustainable energy solutions across the country.

“This initiative not only provides reliable electricity but also contributes to environmental conservation and job creation,” she stated.

Hon. Mwijage expressed her appreciation for President Samia Suluhu Hassan's administration, which has played a pivotal role in fostering partnerships that aid in the production of electricity for the national grid, ensuring wider access for citizens, and generating employment opportunities.

Deograsias Massawe, Managing Director of Mwenga Hydro, highlighted the project’s impact on local communities, noting that it has successfully connected residents from 32 villages to a stable electricity supply.

“This reliable access to energy empowers residents to engage more effectively in their economic activities,” he remarked.

Massawe further explained that the project has been particularly beneficial for entrepreneurs, offering new job opportunities and enhancing operational efficiency.

By transitioning from oil-based power sources to electricity, local businesses have significantly reduced their operational costs, leading to improved productivity.

He also commended REA for its substantial financial support, which has enabled connections for over 8,000 customers, including households, hospitals, schools, and health centers.

Massawe extended his gratitude to President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan for facilitating the successful implementation of the project through operational funding and supportive policies for renewable energy.

Since its inception in 2012, the Mwenga Hydro project has aimed to expand its customer base by an additional 2,900 users over the next two years, further enhancing access to sustainable energy solutions in the region and contributing to the overall economic development of Mufindi District.
