Young Africans (Yanga) and Simba will renew their fierce rivalry on Wednesday night when they face off in the much-anticipated derby at Amaan Complex in Zanzibar.
The match, scheduled for 8:30pm on August 12, comes with both clubs seeking to make an early statement, despite having limited time to prepare after playing matches at the weekend.
For Yanga's coach, the encounter will be his first experience of the country's biggest football rivalry, but he says the limited preparation time will not diminish the quality of the contest.
“This is my first time taking part in this derby, so I am very eager to see what will happen,” he said.
The coach acknowledged that neither side had enjoyed adequate preparation, noting that the two teams were engaged in competitive action over the weekend and also had limited time during the pre-season.
“However, I believe Simba are in the same situation. It will therefore be interesting to see how both teams play,” he said.
He expressed confidence in Yanga's squad, describing it as a group capable of producing attractive football while maintaining intensity throughout the match.
“I have great confidence in my team. We have a squad capable of playing good and attractive football,” he said.
The coach said his ambition goes beyond simply collecting three points, stressing that he wants his team to produce football capable of drawing supporters to the stadium.
“I am a coach who really loves good football. I want to play a style of football that gives people a reason to leave their activities and come to the stadium to watch their team play,” he said.
For the players, however, the immediate priority is clear starting the season with victory in a fixture that carries significant weight for both clubs.
One of Yanga's players said the squad understands the responsibility that comes with defending the club's title and is ready to fight for a positive result.
“One of our goals is to start the season well by winning this important match. We have prepared well and we all understand the importance of this game and the responsibility we have to protect and defend our title,” he said.
He added that the players would rely on unity, determination and confidence as they seek to overcome their rivals.
“We will enter the field united, motivated and confident, believing that we will do everything possible to get a good result,” he said.
The player also appealed to Yanga supporters to fill the stadium and provide the backing the team will need throughout the contest.
“We ask our fans to come to the stadium in large numbers, support us and stay behind us every minute of the game. We know the great ability of our fans to cheer, and we need their support to give us extra strength to fight until the final whistle,” he said.
The Zanzibar encounter is expected to attract significant attention from football fans, with the rivalry between Yanga and Simba extending beyond the pitch to millions of supporters across Tanzania.
For both sides, the derby offers an early opportunity to establish momentum, while for the fans, it presents another chance to witness one of East Africa's most closely followed football rivalries.
