Zanzibar President Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi has visited patients from Zanzibar undergoing specialised treatment at MIOT International Hospital in Chennai, reaffirming the government's commitment to improving access to advanced healthcare while investing in local medical expertise.

The patients are receiving treatment through a sponsorship programme funded by the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar.

During the visit on Saturday, Dr Mwinyi met the patients and their families to hear about their experiences and received briefings from medical specialists on the progress of their treatment.

He also held talks with Zanzibar doctors undertaking advanced training under the Samia Health Super-Specialization Scholarship Programme, urging them to use the expertise gained abroad to strengthen specialised healthcare services at home.

Dr Mwinyi said the government would continue investing in specialist healthcare by expanding training opportunities for medical professionals, improving access to advanced treatment and deepening partnerships with leading international health institutions.

He said these investments are aimed at building local capacity so that more specialised services can be provided within the country, reducing the need for patients to seek treatment abroad while improving the quality of healthcare available to citizens.

The visit reflects Zanzibar's broader strategy to strengthen its health system through human capital development, improved specialist services and international collaboration, with the goal of delivering better healthcare outcomes for its growing population.
