Tanzania's national under-17 women's football team, Serengeti Girls, finished as runners-up in the 2026 CECAFA U-17 Championship after a 3-0 defeat to Uganda in the final played at the KMC Complex in Dar es Salaam on June 23.

Uganda produced a dominant display to secure the regional title, scoring twice in the first half before adding a third goal after the break to complete a convincing victory and lift the championship trophy.

The triumph saw Uganda crowned CECAFA U-17 champions for 2026, while Tanzania concluded an impressive campaign in second place.

Kenya secured third place after defeating South Sudan in the playoff match held earlier on the final day of the tournament.

Serengeti Girls reached the final following a commanding 4-0 victory over South Sudan in the semi-finals, underlining the team's attacking quality and defensive discipline throughout the competition. Uganda earned their place in the final after overcoming Kenya 3-0 in the other semi-final.

Although Tanzania fell short of winning the title, the team's performance throughout the tournament offered plenty of positives.

The young side displayed determination, technical ability and growing maturity against some of the region's strongest opponents.

Their run to the final reflects the continued progress of women's football development in Tanzania and highlights the potential of the country's emerging talent.

The tournament also provided valuable competitive experience for the players as they continue their development at both national and international levels.

For many observers, Serengeti Girls' runners-up finish is another indication of the strides being made in Tanzania's women's football programme, with expectations remaining high for future regional and continental competitions.
