Muyinga Urges calm as October 29 election violence probe nears completion

Social activist Alphonce Patrick Muyinga has called for calm and restraint among political actors and the public as the independent commission investigating incidents linked to the October 29, 2025 General Election nears completion of its work.

Speaking on Friday, April 10, 2026, Muyinga said the commission was established to establish facts surrounding the incidents of violence and unrest before, during, and after the election, and should be allowed to complete its mandate without interference.

He expressed concern over what he described as renewed political tension following remarks made by the Vice Chairman of CHADEMA, John Heche, who recently addressed the media and called for nationwide demonstrations while also raising concerns over the continued detention of opposition politician Tundu Lissu.

Muyinga cautioned that such public statements risk undermining the work of the commission, which he said was formed to uncover the truth and promote national reconciliation. He argued that attempts to mobilise protests and intensify political pressure at this stage could distract from the ongoing investigative process.

According to him, President Samia Suluhu Hassan established the commission as part of efforts to strengthen peace, accountability, and democratic governance.

He said it is important for all stakeholders to respect the process and allow it to reach its conclusion.

He further noted that legal matters involving political figures, including Tundu Lissu, are already before the courts and should be handled through established judicial procedures rather than public confrontation.

Muyinga also criticised what he termed a growing focus on confrontation by some opposition leaders, saying it risks shifting attention away from national development priorities.

He urged young people in particular to be cautious and avoid being drawn into politically charged actions that could disrupt peace and stability.

He appealed to Tanzanians across all sectors to remain peaceful and support the commission’s work as it finalises its report.

He also called on citizens to reject any form of incitement or misinformation that could hinder the completion of the investigation and the delivery of its findings to the relevant authorities for appropriate action.
