The Executive Director of Muhimbili National Hospital, Dr. Delilah Kimambo, led a tree-planting exercise yesterday as part of Tanzania’s World Kidney Day celebrations.

The initiative aimed to raise public awareness about kidney health while encouraging environmental conservation. This year’s theme is “Kidney Health for All, Caring for People, Protecting the Planet.”

Speaking at the event, Dr. Kimambo warned that kidney disease is a growing global challenge. One in ten people worldwide suffers from kidney disease, with an estimated 843 million people affected. Yet only about three million receive specialized treatment, such as dialysis or kidney transplantation.

“In Tanzania, around 7% of the population lives with chronic kidney disease, mostly in urban areas,” she said.

“More than 3,000 patients receive dialysis services, and Muhimbili National Hospital alone cares for over 400 patients. We have also successfully performed kidney transplants for nearly 100 patients so far.”she added

Dr. Kimambo urged Tanzanians to protect their kidney health. She emphasized that kidney disease often develops silently, without obvious symptoms, making early screening and regular health checks critical

She also encouraged everyone to adopt healthy lifestyles to prevent complications and safeguard overall well-being.

The tree-planting exercise, part of the hospital’s annual awareness campaign, symbolized growth, life, and the importance of caring for both people and the planet.
