The partnership between Tanzania and the US is set to boost the country's mining sector, particularly in graphite exploration. With the demand for graphite expected to reach 4.5 million tons by 2050, this collaboration comes at a crucial time.
Tanzania is poised to become a major player in the global graphite market, and this partnership will provide the necessary expertise and technology to unlock its mineral potential.
Graphite is a vital mineral with diverse applications, including batteries for electric vehicles, renewable energy storage, and steel production.
It's also used in lubricants, refractories, and nuclear reactors. The growing demand for graphite is driven by the global shift towards clean energy and sustainable technologies.
The collaboration will focus on training Tanzanian experts and providing equipment for data collection and analysis, enhancing the country's capacity in mineral exploration and sector management.
This will not only improve the management and productivity of the sector but also create jobs and increase its contribution to the country's GDP.
Minister of Minerals, Anthony Mavunde, welcomed the collaboration in Dodoma on Wednesday, 21st January 2026 highlighting the strong partnership between Tanzania and the US.
Speaking at the event, US Acting Ambassador to Tanzania, Andrew Lentz, praised Tanzania's efforts in promoting clean energy and sustainable development, saying the partnership will make Tanzania a hub for mineral research in East Africa.
Overall, this partnership is a significant step forward for Tanzania's mining sector, and it's exciting to see the potential benefits it could bring to the country.
