Minister orders fresh review of economic opportunities ahead of Kilwa Fishing Port launch

The government will conduct a fresh assessment of economic opportunities expected to arise from the upcoming Kilwa Fishing Port, a strategic national project scheduled for completion in December 2025.

The directive was issued by the Minister for Livestock and Fisheries, Dr. Bashiru Ally Kakurwa, during his inspection tour of the construction site on November 28, 2025.

Dr. Bashiru said the reassessment is necessary to ensure the country fully maximizes the benefits of the TSh 289.5 billion investment.

He instructed the Ministry’s leadership, Kilwa District authorities and the Lindi Regional Office to form a dedicated committee to review earlier targets and identify new opportunities linked to the port’s development.

“This port opens the door to major commercial prospects from industrial fishing to improved markets for large-, medium-, and small-scale fishers,” he said.

“As a Ministry, we must communicate these opportunities clearly so that people understand the jobs, investments and value chains that will be created.”he added

The Minister urged financial institutions and private-sector players to begin mapping out areas where they can invest or support the industry, saying their early involvement will be key to unlocking the port’s full potential.

“Let us get prepared to demonstrate that we are ready to support the President’s vision. When Her Excellency concludes her tenure, she should leave Tanzanians with a reason to smile,” he noted.

Construction of the Kilwa Fishing Port, one of the country’s major blue-economy projects, is progressing steadily and remains on schedule to be completed by the end of December 2025.

The facility is expected to boost fisheries production, expand export opportunities, and stimulate local economic growth across Lindi and beyond.
