Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner (RC) Albert Chalamila has reassured city residents that the government is fast-tracking solutions to the transport challenges facing users of the Dar es Salaam Rapid Transit (DART) system.
During an early morning visit to the Kimara terminal on October 1, Mr. Chalamila announced that more buses will be deployed this week to ease congestion on the Kimara–City Centre route.
He said the government had already reached an agreement with a private company to provide the additional buses.
“No government wishes to see its people suffer,” the RC said. “This government listens to its citizens, and the transport difficulties with the BRT are now in the final stages of being addressed.”
He added that a limited number of buses will be introduced immediately as the authorities work on a long-term solution.
More than 200 buses, he said, have already been shipped to Dar es Salaam under a new contractor and are expected to be rolled out soon.
Some commuters who gathered at the terminal requested that ordinary buses be allowed to reach the city centre, either through the BRT lanes or via regular routes.
Mr. Chalamila responded that while the government is exploring ways to expand ordinary bus services, they would not be permitted on the BRT lanes because of system regulations.
Commuters welcomed the government’s pledge, but urged that more buses be made available quickly to ease the daily struggles of travelling between Mbezi, Kimara, and the city centre.
