Namibia President pledges support for AU Envoy Mulamula on women and peace agenda

Namibia’s President Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has pledged her government’s full support to Ambassador Liberata Mulamula, the African Union’s Special Envoy on Women, Peace, and Security, as she undertakes her new continental role.

The two leaders met at State House in Windhoek, where President Netumbo congratulated Ambassador Mulamula on her appointment, saying Namibia was proud to see a Tanzanian take up such a crucial leadership position within the African Union.

She said the appointment reflected the strong historical and diplomatic ties between Namibia and Tanzania, two nations that have long worked together in the liberation and development of Africa.

“Namibia has always been at the forefront of advancing the Women, Peace, and Security agenda. We were among the countries that championed the United Nations Security Council Resolution on women’s participation in peace and security 25 years ago,” President Netumbo said.

The Namibian leader noted that her government continues to lead by example in promoting gender equality and youth inclusion in leadership, emphasizing that no country can achieve sustainable development without the participation of all citizens.

“Today, Namibia is among the few countries where women occupy key decision-making roles. We have a female President, Speaker of Parliament, Parmanent Secretary  of the ruling party, Secretary to Cabinet, and 57 percent of our Cabinet ministers are women, including those in key ministries such as Foreign Affairs, Trade, and Education,” she added.

Ambassador Mulamula commended Namibia for being a role model in gender leadership and inclusive governance.

She said Namibia’s experience offers valuable lessons for the African continent as it works to implement the Women, Peace, and Security agenda.

She also expressed her gratitude to President Netumbo for her commitment to strengthening cooperation with the African Union in advancing women’s participation in peacebuilding and decision-making processes.

Ambassador Mulamula, a seasoned diplomat and former Tanzanian Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, was appointed as AU Special Envoy earlier this year to spearhead efforts promoting women’s leadership in peace and security across Africa.
