The government has announced the start of compensation for residents of Nyakabale and Nyamalembo in Geita Municipality, paving the way for mining activities by Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML). The move ends a land conflict that has persisted for more than 26 years.
Speaking in Geita on August 21, 2025, Minister for Minerals Anthony Mavunde said the decision reflects the government’s commitment under President Samia Suluhu Hassan to resolve long-standing disputes affecting communities.
“I want to thank residents for their patience for over two decades. Today, we announce the resolution of this conflict because your government cares. President Samia has always insisted that citizens must receive their rights without unnecessary delays,” Mavunde said.
He confirmed that GGML has agreed to begin the compensation process for the affected residents. Starting August 22, a government team of experts will begin property valuation, which is expected to be completed within 40 days, enabling residents to receive their dues promptly.
The minister explained that the dispute involved 13 key issues, 10 of which have already been resolved in the past 15 months.
He noted that GGML will also adjust its mining license boundaries, returning part of the land for community use.
“I commend all leaders who have contributed to this achievement, particularly Geita Regional Commissioner Martin Shigella and the special task team. Their diligence in addressing residents’ concerns has been critical in reaching this milestone,” he said.
Mavunde urged residents to cooperate fully during the valuation process and avoid attempts to disrupt the exercise, warning that such actions could delay compensation and hinder progress.
Regional Commissioner Shigella thanked President Samia for closely monitoring the matter and praised Mavunde for ensuring the implementation of government directives.
“The people of Geita have waited for a long time. We appreciate their resilience, and we are committed to ensuring this process benefits everyone involved,” said Shigella.
Residents of Nyakabale and Nyamalembo will benefit from the compensation process, which is seen as a historic breakthrough in ending the prolonged dispute.
The move is expected to restore confidence between the investor and the community while fostering social harmony and development in Geita Region.
