In a bold step to strengthen the future of golf in Tanzania, the Tanzania Golf Union (TGU) has donated sports equipment worth TSh15 million to support the development of junior golf across the country.
The donation coincided with the official introduction of the newly formed Junior Golf Committee, which will oversee and advise on strategies to grow the game among children and young players.
TGU Chairman Gilman Kasiga said the donated equipment will be distributed to various golf clubs nationwide as part of a long-term plan to nurture young talent and expand the sport’s reach from the grassroots level.
“Our focus is on building a solid foundation for golf through youth engagement,” Kasiga said. “This committee will play a key role in guiding junior golf development, and ensuring that our young players participate in national and international tournaments.”
He emphasized that the union aims to encourage clubs to establish and strengthen junior golf programs, seeing youth participation as critical to the sport’s sustainability.
Committee member Maryanne Mugo said the team will work with clubs that currently lack junior programs to help them establish youth teams. She noted that while clubs such as Lugalo and TCC have a strong base of junior players, others are still catching up.
“Our mission is to ensure children get involved in the sport from an early stage — starting at the club level and growing through national and international platforms,” said Mugo. “Golf is not just a sport. It instills discipline and teaches children valuable life skills. We are committed to working hand-in-hand with clubs to make this possible.”
TGU Operations Manager Johnson John called on parents and private sector stakeholders to support the initiative, saying their involvement is crucial to nurturing the next generation of golfers.
“We invite families, sponsors, and partners to join hands with us in this journey. Investing in junior golf today is an investment in the future of the sport in Tanzania,” he said.
