Fadhil Nkya, a professional golfer from Gymkhana Club in Dar es Salaam, has once again emerged victorious in the third season of the Lina PG Tour a prestigious golf tournament held in memory of the late Lina Nkya, a former member of Tanzania’s national golf team.
Nkya claimed the top spot in the professional category, with Abdallah Yusufu finishing second. In the amateur division, Jay Nathwani of Arusha Gymkhana Club secured first place.
The tournament, which wrapped up yesterday at the scenic TPC Golf Course in Moshi, Kilimanjaro Region, attracted over 130 players from various golf clubs across the country.
Speaking after his win, Nkya expressed pride in clinching the title for the third consecutive time, attributing his continued success to relentless practice and unwavering determination.
“This is my third straight win in this tournament. The key to my performance is consistent training and never giving up,” he said.
He described the Lina PG Tour as an important platform that not only prepares players for international competitions but also brings together professional, amateur, and recreational golfers to grow the sport.
“I’ve participated in all six editions of the Lina PG Tour since its inception. These tournaments are now among the most significant in Tanzania and have helped us prepare for both local and international events,” Nkya added.
Nkya also challenged the widespread belief that golf is a sport reserved for the wealthy, insisting that anyone with the passion and commitment can learn and excel.
“I’m a coach as well, and I train young golfers some of them free of charge with the aim of introducing them to the game. I encourage more people to start learning golf so that we can develop a strong pool of players to represent our country,” he emphasized.
Meanwhile, amateur winner Jay Nathwani urged aspiring young golfers, particularly those hoping to go pro, to dedicate adequate time to practice if they want to succeed.
“There’s no magic in golf. If you want to become a top player and play professionally, you have to work hard and train without giving up,” he said.
“Golf is not an easy sport. The Lina PG Tour itself is quite challenging. But with proper preparation and serious training, anyone can come out on top. Practice is everything if you’re aiming to go pro,” Nathwani explained.
He also commended the family of the late Lina Nkya, especially Said Nkya, for organizing such a competitive and unifying event.
“I really enjoy the Lina PG Tour. It allows us to meet and compete with many golfers, and that experience helps us grow. We'll keep pushing ourselves to perform well in this and other tournaments,” Nathwani added.
Major Chediel Msechu, a recreational golfer from Lugalo Golf Club in Dar es Salaam, also praised the organizers for creating a platform that continues to challenge elite players, particularly professionals, to raise their game and earn opportunities for international competitions.
“I applaud all the winners of this tournament and encourage the organizers to keep this initiative going. These events are essential for nurturing local talent in golf. I urge them not to lose momentum,” he said.
During the closing ceremony, Said Nkya husband of the late Lina and one of the tournament’s organizers thanked all the participants and encouraged those who didn’t win to continue competing.
“We are grateful to TPC Club here in Moshi for allowing us to host the tournament on their grounds. I also want to thank the entire organizing team, led by my daughter Yasmin Chali. Thanks to their efforts, this tournament has been a great success,” said Nkya.
