Tanzania secures key UREA fertilizer deal with Qatar energy to boost agricultural growth

Our Reporter, Doha, Qatar

In a landmark agreement poised to strengthen Tanzania’s agricultural sector, the Tanzania Fertilizer Company (TFC) recently held high-level discussions with Qatar Energy, Qatar’s state-owned energy giant and one of the world’s largest UREA (N46%) fertilizer producers.

The agreement aims to secure a steady supply of UREA fertilizer, essential for crop nutrition and productivity, for the Tanzanian market.

The discussions were held at Qatar Energy’s headquarters in Doha, Qatar’s capital city, with Tanzania’s Ambassador to Qatar, H.E. Habib Awesi, present to witness the talks.

Qatar Energy’s acceptance of Tanzania’s request to supply UREA fertilizer to TFC opens doors for a more sustainable and affordable fertilizer supply chain for Tanzania.

Potential Benefits for Tanzania's Agricultural Sector

The UREA fertilizer supplied under this agreement will support Tanzania’s goal to improve agricultural productivity, particularly benefiting staple crops such as maize, rice, and wheat, which are vital for food security and economic growth.

Tanzania’s agricultural sector, which contributes significantly to GDP and employs about 65% of the country’s workforce, faces challenges in ensuring sufficient fertilizer access for farmers.

High-quality UREA from Qatar Energy is expected to play a crucial role in meeting this need, reducing the cost burden on farmers and enhancing crop yields.

Broader Areas of Collaboration Explored

The partnership discussions extended beyond the supply of UREA. TFC and Qatar Energy explored other collaboration areas, potentially in technical training and knowledge exchange programs, aimed at enhancing fertilizer application methods, soil health, and efficient resource management.

These initiatives could improve Tanzania’s agricultural productivity, with Qatar Energy’s technical expertise potentially helping TFC introduce more innovative and sustainable agricultural practices.

Strengthening Tanzania-Qatar Relations

This cooperation between TFC and Qatar Energy underscores growing ties between Tanzania and Qatar, which have increasingly focused on trade, investment, and knowledge exchange.

Ambassador Awesi emphasized that such partnerships reinforce diplomatic and economic ties, driving mutual benefits in essential sectors like agriculture.

Qatar Energy’s commitment to supplying UREA aligns with Tanzania’s ambitions to boost self-reliance in agriculture by addressing fertilizer supply challenges and ensuring more affordable, quality inputs for farmers.

The partnership could set a precedent for further collaboration in agricultural and energy sectors, enhancing Tanzania’s agricultural resilience and economic development.
